Do You Really Need A Winter Coat

Has winter finally arrived? For many of you out there it probably has, but here in Raanana, Israel, winter - as we know it - never really comes. Yes, the weather changes and the sun is not as strong, the humidity is gone and the air is cooler. But it is not COLD. Sure, it is time to change over your closet, to take out your winter collection and replace the summer wear. But how much winter clothing do we really need? I wish we would need a lot but unfortunately we do not need all that much.

When you walk into a store filled with the latest winter styles, don't you just want to fill up your arms and buy, buy, buy? Well, I do. I love winter fabrics and designs, I love the warm, cozy feel and the deep, earth tones. And in the winter the most important item of clothing is a coat. You can throw on a coat over anything and look great.

Throwing on a coat would work if you lived in most of the northern hemisphere or even Jerusalem or in the north of the country… but here on the coast not far from Tel Aviv you will be lucky to wear your coat a handful of times. So what is a woman to do?

Frankly, if you already own a winter coat and it is in good condition, keep it and use it until you are through with it. If you do not own a winter coat and are looking to buy one (because you are going to travel somewhere cold) be smart:
-Buy a good quality classic coat, one that can be used to dress up or down.
-The coat should be medium weight that way you can use it here and also layer underneath for colder climates. -
- Leather is perfect, it is lightweight, can be worn in mild temperatures and both in rain and snow… very versatile and leather looks better the more you wear it.
So do you really need a winter coat? Probably not but if you are like me, you can't resist.

  1. I just bought a winter coat even though I too live in Raanana. I didn't spend a fortune but invested in quality and a classic color (black) and cut. Reason being that if I am traveling, even if only once a year to a cold climate, I need that coat! And it lasts since I wear it at most several days a year. My last one lasted for many years!
